Descriptive Speaking
By Annette Rey
Here’s another way to exercise your brain – and your writing skill – with a stimulating writing challenge.
Describe how to perform a counterclockwise motion to someone who is alone, locked in a windowless room, and the person is from a foreign country and unfamiliar with the term. He speaks English, but it is not his first language.
Where do you start? What words do you choose? How do you prompt him?
Let’s say I begin by asking him, “Is there something round in the room?” He answers, “Yes, a ball.”
This answer tells me he understands the concept round, but the item is not useful for explaining the word counterclockwise. So, I go on…
How would you proceed?
(BIG HINT in the picture, but press your mind to explain it your way).
